Background of the Study
As universities continue to embrace digital technologies, the need for secure data exchange has become more pronounced. At the University of Maiduguri, Borno State, secure transmission of sensitive academic, research, and administrative data is critical. Traditional encryption methods, such as RSA and AES, rely on mathematical algorithms that are becoming increasingly vulnerable to future quantum computing advancements (Shor, 2023). Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is a promising approach to secure data exchange, as it relies on the principles of quantum mechanics to create a secure key for encrypting data, which is immune to interception by unauthorized parties (Bennett et al., 2023). QKD allows secure key exchange over insecure channels by using the quantum property of entanglement, where any interception of the key results in detectable errors.
At the University of Maiduguri, the implementation of QKD could significantly enhance the security of its communication networks, especially given the institution's reliance on digital platforms for communication and data sharing. This study will explore the potential for implementing QKD to facilitate secure data exchange within the university's network.
Statement of the Problem
The University of Maiduguri, Borno State, faces challenges related to securing its digital communication channels, which carry sensitive academic and administrative data. Traditional encryption methods may no longer provide adequate protection against the growing capabilities of quantum computers. The university requires a more advanced and secure method for data exchange, specifically Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), which has not yet been implemented in its infrastructure.
Objectives of the Study
To implement Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) protocols for secure data exchange at the University of Maiduguri, Borno State.
To evaluate the effectiveness of QKD in securing the university’s data communication systems.
To assess the feasibility and challenges of integrating QKD into the university’s existing communication infrastructure.
Research Questions
How can Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) be implemented for secure data exchange at the University of Maiduguri?
How effective is QKD in protecting the university’s data exchange from potential cyber threats?
What are the challenges and benefits of integrating QKD into the university’s existing communication infrastructure?
Significance of the Study
This study will offer valuable insights into the implementation of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) for securing academic and administrative data exchanges at the University of Maiduguri. By implementing QKD, the university can future-proof its communication systems against quantum-based cyber threats, ensuring the confidentiality and integrity of its sensitive data.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the implementation and evaluation of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) at the University of Maiduguri, Borno State, with a specific focus on secure data exchange. It will not address broader cybersecurity or network infrastructure issues.
